Hatchers Pass

While we're really here to spend time with the family and as much time with Dad as we can, we took a time out today. We borrowed Dad's truck and drove up to Hatchers Pass to check out the old mines and maybe see some wildlife. It was a very cold, drizzly day but we managed to get some great pictures anyways.

Count Your Blessings

Since Dad got sick, Mom's been going through a downsizing mode. She is seriously getting rid of just about everything.

She asked me if I could do something with the family pictures because she had never had time to put them into albums. "Sure" I said. It sounded like a good idea. I'll just scan them in and upload them to the family website.

Box after box after box has been ariving in the mail.

It's great fun to sit there and go through photo after photo. but somehow, when I add the additional step of placing the photo onto the scanner, it turns into a chore.

I know it's such a cool thing to have all these photos - many families dont have this many. And really, on the surface it sounds like such a cool project - and I'm looking forward to having the photos scanned in. It's the actual scanning them in part that's got me bogged down.

Maybe I need to move the computer and scanner into the living room so I can watch mythbusters while I'm scanning them in.

5 things

my husband has so many varied interests it just blows me away. instead of focusing on me, here's a meme of five things about my husband...

  1. he is studying middle eastern history and cultures and he speaks several languages including spanish, farsi, arabic, and he is currently learning tajik
  2. when he took the spanish language test in the army, he scored so high they turned around and made him take an english test to make sure he knew how to speak english.
  3. he plays bagpipes
  4. he trains in brazilian jiu jitsu
  5. the one place on earth he wants to visit more than anywhere else is Iran

Sometimes i feel so plain next to him - i like photography and reading and cooking... but life with him is such a wild ride. he's so much fun and i never know what he's going to come up with next.

the C-word

Two weeks ago my dad went in to surgery to remove his spleen because of a blood clot. when they got in there they saw that he had pancreatic cancer that had spread throughout his abdomen. they just closed him back up without even taking the spleen. they told us he has 3 months to live. Since then they've told us he could have as much as two years. two years never sounded so good. I dont know how to deal with this.

What's on your agenda?

A friend of mine just told me that the other day his 5 year old son said:

"Boys have penises and Girls have agendas"

I'm thinking about making bumperstickers out of that one.

Dahlia Lounge

This afternoon when I was visiting Grandma, I told her Aaron and I were planning to go to the Dahlia Lounge for the first time. She said, “have the pie.” When Grandma tells you to try someone else’s pie, take notice. She knows pie.

So we’re not rich and I’m trying to lose weight – yet our favorite thing in the whole wide world is to eat really good food at nice restaurants. We’ve found that the best way to protect my waistline and his wallet is to share a starter and entree rather than each of us getting our own. This doesn’t always work well for us when it comes to service. Sometimes the server will just bring us a spare plate. Sometimes this results in distainful looks from the wait staff. But at Dahlia Lounge we were treated like rockstars.

Our Tuscan grilled bread salad with pesto, olives, mozzarella and spicy coppacola was artfully presented on two separate, smaller plates – with a smile. This salad was amazing. Very earthy with warm smoky tones – I feel like I’m describing a wine – yet the salad was good enough to warrant such pithiness.

Also artfully presented on two smaller platters was our shared entree. The five spice Peking duck was delicious: perfect herby crust, juicy inside, served with a super hot teriyaki and plum jam. Yummy.

And by the way, Grandma was right. The coconut cream pie was heavenly, topped off with a towering mound of toasted coconut and white chocolate shavings.

The meal was not cheap, even sharing the dishes. One soda, one scotch, one salad, one entree and one desert came out well over sixty dollars. But definitely worth it.

Come if you can, save up if you need to.

Save room for pie.
